Study: Most Women Prefer Best Friends To Husbands

At some point during a wedding, either the bride or the groom (or both) will take the microphone and sweetly say “I’m just so happy to have married my best friend”

Now it’s a nice thing to say, but truth is, most of us have another contender for best friend lurking in the background. You might be able to spend the rest of your life loving your partner, but did they hold your hair back when you drank an entire bottle of Malibu in 2009?

No they did not. Which is why it’s no great surprise to learn that research from Champneys claims over half of women prefer their best friend to their husband. (Ouch). The survey asked 1,517 women from all over the UK who they were closer to and just over 50% said it was their bestie.

The full list of reasons can be read below.

  • We can talk about everything (57%)
  • She listens more (45%)
  • I can tell her things I could not tell my partner (44%)
  • We enjoy the same things  (41%)
  • We laugh until we cry (39%)
  • I can truly be myself (29%)
  • We go back much further (29%)
  • She offers better advice (28%)
  • She is less irritating (26%)
  • We have much more in common (25%)
  • She has a better sense of humor (19%)
  • We go wild when we’re together (18%)

As well as all these reasons, it looks like it might be to do with quality time, with girlfriends making the time to go away together.

Forty-three percent of the women Champneys spoke to have a spa break or girly weekend with their friends planned for the coming year. And when it comes to exciting activities, women are keen to spend time with their friends rather than their other halves.

Thirty percent of the women polled would rather have a boozy lunch with mates than their husband, while a further 54 percent would rather have a pampering session with friends than their partner.

Even more depressingly, 60% of women said they have a better time if no men are around to intrude on their female social gatherings. Friendly.
